CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Emily wandered the manor’s halls in search of the library. The only sound was her footsteps, her only company the rows of tightly shut doors.

Over the last few days her health had improved. She could now spend most of the day out of bed and could even go for short walks along the grounds.

The doctor’s news had been devastating. She’d known her time was limited, but his morbid diagnosis had thrown her into a deep melancholy.

She’d believed she would have more time. It was not to be. Now she had to reevaluate everything.

She was in Scotland, farther away from Italy and her goal then she’d ever been. She had to escape this place. But how? They were utterly isolated in this remote land, among endless miles of unforgiving cliffs and raw elements.

MacRoyce was right about imploring his staff for aid. She’d asked Peggy if there was a coach bound for England. The girl had gone dumb and had quit the room without another word. She’d received a similar reaction from the other four servants she’d asked.

She would not give up. Every day she grew stronger and came to know her prison and her captor better. It was only a matter of time till she devised a plan. She’d had time to observe much during her recuperation. His servants revered him as a leader, a man to be respected, and not just as a landlord.

MacRoyce was a man of many contradictions. The man who had cared for her during her illness was the same man who had kidnapped her in the first place! It was almost as if he were two different people, and she didn’t know how to reconcile them.

She’d had time to wander and explore his home. Rosscairn was a rustic hunting lodge. Grand, but lacking a woman’s touch. Designed for functionality, without standard adornments most aristocrats felt essential. There wasn’t even a mirror in her room.

The manor grounds were expansive and impressive, the land beyond so different from the countryside she was used to. The moors were a lush emerald carpet, fading to ominous craggy hills in the distance. The sky above shifted from fair to tempest and back, often in the space of an hour.

Admiring the view from her room gave her a strange feeling. This place was familiar somehow, even with all its novel mystery. She found herself daydreaming about the people who’d dwelled in this rugged, ancient land before her. What had their lives been like, their hopes, their dreams?

She’d also discovered the meaning of MacRoyce’s infuriating pet name for her. Peggy had smiled shyly when she’d told her that a piseag was “a wee cat, miss.”

The maid, Peggy, had explained the home’s history. It was built on the site of an ancient clan holding that had been sacked during a war.

MacRoyce had ignored her completely since the doctor’s visit, when she had yelled at him to leave her alone. It was what she had wanted, yet it left her feeling strangely empty. It
